Rosalie Hall is a Young Parent Agency and accredited Children’s Mental Health Centre dedicated to providing specialized care and treatment for young parents, their infants, and children. Our services include high quality learning and supportive child care program, infant mental health treatment, Live-In Treatment Residence, and a wide range of outreach programs for young families in need. Each year, we deliver evidence-based treatment to more than 1,000 individuals, with an additional 3,000 supported through outreach and drop-in services. Serving Toronto communities since 1914, and operating from our Scarborough facility since 1956, Rosalie Hall carries forward the Misericordia tradition of over 150 years of service. Position Overview
The School Program Counsellor reports to the Manager, Day Programs and Community Services. Working within an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, trauma-informed, harm reduction, disability justice, and mental health recovery framework, the School Program Counsellor provides assessments, therapeutic counselling, and clinical consultations in-person, virtually, and by phone. The role includes crisis assessment, referrals, and connecting school program clients with appropriate services and supports.
Summary of Duties
- Perform intake duties and complete assessments for referrals to Rosalie Hall programs, as required
- Offer brief service (as appropriate) to clients during the intake/ assessment period
- Provide counseling to school program clients utilizing a wide range of approaches that best meet the clients’ needs and circumstances
- Provide a range of counselling services (individual, couple, group, family) that are congruent with the individualized plan of care/ service
- Account for each client’s values, preferences, and circumstances to support the development of client-centered goals/treatment plan
- Provide preliminary assessment of risk in crisis situations, consult and devise an intervention and safety plan, and provide crisis intervention
- Provide case management services to both short-term and long-term clients, through the development and implementation of a care plan to address their priority and emerging needs
- Formulate a service plan with each client within thirty (30) days of the initial interview
- Participate in case conferences and clinical meetings in order to ensure the coordination of services and a continuum of care, as well as maintaining relationships with partner organizations
- Identify appropriate and credible resources responsive to client needs, considering culture, language, reading level, accessibility, and health literacy
- Facilitate or lead therapeutic and/or psychosocial support groups as required
- Develop/prepare group materials, including group curriculum, handouts, and supplies
- Provide clinical support to individual group participants, as appropriate/required
- Create, maintain, and update appropriate client records, in a timely, efficient manner.
General
- Maintain all aspects of confidentiality relating to clients, volunteers, staff, programs, community members and community partners
- Provide mentorship, training and/or supervision to student placements and volunteers
- Participate in team meetings regularly and promote the healthy functioning of the team
- Participate in ongoing training and education.
- Participate in supervision sessions and annual performance appraisals with supervisor
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation in a timely manner and collect statistical data required for the accountability of the program
- Represent the team on internal and/or external staff committees as directed by supervisor
Qualifications/ Skills
- Registered Social Worker (RSW) in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
- Minimum of 3 years related experience in mental health, addictions, and/or social services
- Demonstrated experience supporting vulnerable families with mental health and substance use issues from an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, harm reduction, trauma informed, and mental health recovery approach
- Knowledge of, experience with, and demonstrated ability in providing supportive counseling utilizing various modalities (e.g. Narrative Therapy, CBT, DBT, etc.)
- Comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the mental health, addictions, health sector, and community resources
- Solid understanding of the intersectionality of systemic barriers and social determinants of health, including racism, discrimination, and oppression
- Excellent oral and written English communication fluency
- French or other second language(s) is a strong asset
- Training in clinical interviewing and evidence-informed interventions is recommended
